History of FIRST
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a program
founded in 1992 by Dean Kaman, the man popularly known for inventing the
Segway.
After seeing how youth were more interested in the the entertainment industry
than vital careers in math and science, Mr. Kamen decided to create an organization
that would cater to youth and allow them to explore and become inspired by
engineering. Modeling the new program after sports, Dean created a robotics
competition for teams made up of high school students. Since 1992, teams from
around the world are given a new game. To participate in the game teams need to
construct a robot in six weeks using the same materials and techniques that are
employed by professionals in electrical, mechanical, and programming fields.
At the end of the six week build season teams ship their robot to a storage facility
where the robot stays until teams compete in their regional. If teams make it through
the regional, they are able to participate in the Championship Event. Through its 18
years of existence, FIRST has added three more programs
that are made for elementary and junior high.
Gracious Professionalism
A core value of FIRST is Gracious Professionalism. Coined by FIRST
co-founder Dr. Woodie Flowers, this term is used to describe how teams should act
towards team members, other teams, and how to compete. It is basically treating
others with respect and kindness, being patient, and acting with integrity. Being
graciously professional is not just for the competition season, but it is both a
frame of mind and a code of conduct to be used throughout the entire year.
